Google mengatakan bahwa aplikasi Drive untuk desktop dipastikan takkan lagi mendapat dukungan mulai 11 Desember nanti. Secara keseluruhan, perusahaan yang berkantor di Mountain View tersebut menegaskan bahwa aplikasi Drive akan sepenuhnya dimatikan pada 12 Maret 2018.
Google mengatakan bahwa pengguna yang menggunakan Drive di PC akan mulai menerima pemberitahuan ini pada Oktober. Perusahaan mengalihkan pengguna pada dua layanan pengganti, yakni untuk kalangan bisnis atau konsumen.
Meski aplikasinya telah ditutup, Drive dipastikan tidak menghilang. Pengguna tetap bisa mengaksesnya dari situs, aplikasi mobile atau layanan baru yang disebut Backup and Sync.
